Le poing dans la bouche

Sometimes one reading can hide another. When I read Thomas Brussig's Helden wie wir and his observation of "liberated speech" and its illusions another reading came back to my mind: Georges-Arthur Goldschmidt's Le poing dans la bouche (The fist into the mouth).
German and jewish, he had to leave Germany in 1938 to save his life, went to France and passed the war hidden in catholic boarding school. Discovering French and not beeing able to forget German, his mother language, that was now confiscated by the nazis, he never stopped to compare the two, in one language looking for things he found in the other one.
German seemed to be simple and transparent where French was vanishing and ambigous. Finally Nietzsche and Kafka over all helped him to re-appropriate his mother language.
Nevertheless he never wrote his books in this language, but allways in French and let them be translated.
However he himself translated Kafka and Handke into French.
